What is a Whitworth thread?

Answer

Early in the industrial era there was a need for uniform standards in manufacturing. In England a system of pitch and number of threads per inch was established. It is not used now but is encountered in cars and machinery from the 1880-1900's. The Whitworth thread was one of the systems in the manufacturing nuts and bolts (Fasteners) but is no longer used.
